Worm's Eye View Perspective Grid
Looking up from the pavement: every vertical leans in toward a vanishing point above the picture.
The looking-up grid
Point a camera up and the verticals, which stay parallel while it is level, start converging toward a point above the picture. The horizon meanwhile sinks toward the bottom edge and takes the two horizontal vanishing points with it. This worm's eye view perspective grid is the three-point grid opened in that state: low horizon, a zenith point above the frame, and the ground plane seen almost edge-on beneath you, still gridded in metres so that whatever stands on it is the right size.
The camera starts 0.6 m off the ground, roughly a crouch, tilted 35° up at a 24 mm lens, which is the standard "towering building" setup. The lower the camera and the steeper the tilt, the more the world leans in and the more of every underside you see: soffits, the ceilings of balconies, the underside of a jaw on a figure. The frame marks a 16:9 or letterboxed shot for storyboards.
Tilt, height and lens
Tilt is the strength of the lean; 15–20° is a natural glance up a façade, 35–45° is the comic-book hero angle, 60° and beyond has the verticals rushing to a point just above the frame. Camera height decides what is near: at 0.3 m the kerb is huge and a person's feet fill the foreground; at 1.6 m the view is a pedestrian looking up at a tower. Lens decides how much the top of a building splays: 16–24 mm makes a ten-storey block look like a hundred, 50 mm keeps the convergence believable.
The bird's eye view grid is the same camera tilted the other way; the 3-point grid is the general tool with every tilt available.
Drawing on it
Every vertical edge runs toward the point above the picture; every edge along one street direction goes to its vanishing point on the low horizon. Because the horizon is low, figures standing on the ground have their feet near it and their heads high in the frame, growing quickly as they come closer, which is the whole effect of a low shot. What is a worm's eye view perspective grid?
A three-point perspective grid with the camera tilted upward. The horizon drops to the bottom of the picture or below it, the two horizontal vanishing points lie on that low horizon, and the verticals of buildings and figures converge to a third vanishing point above the picture. It is the perspective of a tower seen from the pavement, or a hero seen from a child's height.
How is it different from a bird's eye view?
Same geometry, opposite tilt. Bird's eye tilts down: high horizon, third point below. Worm's eye tilts up: low horizon, third point above. On this site the two are separate pages of the same 3-point grid, each opened with its camera already tilted the right way.
Where does the horizon go in a worm's eye view?
At the camera's eye level, which is low in the picture or off the bottom edge. Anything below the horizon is seen from above, anything above it from below, so in a strong worm's eye almost everything shows its underside: ceilings of balconies, soffits, the bottom of a raised arm.
Why do the verticals lean inward?
Because you are looking up, the tops of vertical edges are further from you than the bottoms, and further means smaller. All vertical edges therefore converge toward a single point above, the zenith of the tilted camera. The steeper the tilt and the wider the lens, the closer that point comes to the top of the frame and the stronger the lean.
What is a worm's eye view used for?
Towers and skylines from street level, figures made monumental (superhero covers, statues, a boss in a game), the underside of bridges and canopies, and any shot that should feel like the viewer is small. Animation and comics call it a low-angle or up shot.
